MPF 4TH PRESS RELEASE - ISA ARRESTS
8th November 2008

The Muslim Professionals Forum ( MPF ) applauds the decisions handed down at the Shah Alam High Court and Kuala Lumpur Sessions court on 7th November, 2008.

In ordering the release of ISA detainee, blogger Raja Petra Kamaruddin, judge Syed Ahmad Helmy Syed Ahmad has shown great wisdom and fairness as has judge Komathy Suppiah in denying the prosecution's request for the case of Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim to be transferred to the High Court. We similarly echo the sentiments of the defense counsel in the former case, when he said that this was a “ historic ruling and profound moment for civil liberties in this country.”

The ISA is an archaic piece of legislation and the time has come for its natural demise. The Muslim Professionals Forum very strongly calls for the immediate repeal of this draconian relic and the prompt judicial review of all ISA detainees. We urge the government to take the bold step of doing what is right and just. Justice and fairness are principles enshrined in Islam, and it is incumbent upon every Muslim to uphold these values, elevating them to their sublime pedestal.

The decisions in our courts yesterday augurs well for our judiciary, which has been the brunt of many criticisms lately. These judges are beacons that shine through the winds of change, a gust that has blown across the globe. Resistance to such would only rank amongst the most futile of actions. We have but two options, to embrace this change that is upon us, or be left amongst the outcast nations of the world.

MPF 3ND PRESS RELEASE - ISA ARRESTS
The Qur’an guarantees Freedom of Expression, so Free Raja Petra and all ISA detainees
25th September 2008

We read the statement issued by the Home Minister concerning the detention of Raja Petra Kamaruddin under the dreaded and inhumane Internal Security Act (ISA) with skepticism. According to the Home Minister, Raja Petra was detained because his articles ridiculed Islam. One is now left to wonder whether Islam itself allows such detention without trial in order to protect its sanctity from being ridiculed by people, the likes of Raja Petra.

We would like to stress the fact that there is ample evidence in the Qur’an which guarantees freedom of expression (hurriyat ar-ra’iy) that is generally accepted as a subset of freedom of speech (hurriyat al-qaul). Individuals should be able to accept or reject a particular faith or dogma on the basis of personal conviction, and that no amount of external pressure or compulsion should be permitted. The cardinal Qur’anic doctrine is that: "There shall be no coercion in matters of faith" [2:256]

Every single person has the right, guaranteed by the Qur’an, to freely follow and express his convictions, irrespective of whether he is right or wrong. By emphasizing people’s right to follow their conviction, the Qur’an reiterates a long standing position, which it traces back to one of the earliest known Prophets, Noah: "Said [Noah]: O my people! What do you think? If [it be true that] I am taking my stand on a clear evidence from my Sustainer, who has vouched safe unto me grace from himself – [a revelation] to which you have remained blind-: [if this be true] can we force it on you even though it be hateful to you?"[11:28]

The message of freedom of belief and conviction, and the call to religious tolerance is reiterated time and again through various Prophets, as it is quite apparent in the message of Prophet Shu’ayb to his people: "And if there be some among you who have come to believe in the message which I bear, while the others do not believe, then have patience in adversity till God shall judge between us [and them]: for He is the best of all judges!" [7:87]

Not only does the Qur’an recognise the individual’s right to freedom of conviction, but it also recognises his/her moral freedom to act on the basis of their conviction: "Say: O my [truth-denying] people! Do ye all that may be within your power, [whereas] I, behold, shall labour [in God’s way]: in time you will come to know who it is that shall be visited [in this world] by suffering which will cover him with ignominy, and upon whom long-lasting suffering shall alight [in the life to come]!" [39: 39-40].

Indeed, one cannot find in the Qur’an any support for the internment or incarceration for those who opted to follow their conscience, even though their convictions might be contrary to the mainstream idea, or even up to the level of "heretical" in nature. Using Islam as a "tool" to justify detention without trial is anathema to the basic principles of "adl" (just) and "ihsan" (benevolence) that formed the foundation of Islamic jurisprudence. Such cowardly act of invoking ISA every time when there were dissenting views against the authoritarian government and their despotic ulama’ will not augur well for the future of free and democratic Malaysia.

One is then left to speculate whether such actions were in reality meant to maintain the political hegemony of the ruling elite and that we are actually gravitating towards the creation of a police state instead.

If one were to look back into history, the reason the Islamic world flourished during the earlier period was an early emphasis on "freedom of speech", as summarized by al-Hasyimi (a cousin of Caliph al-Ma’mun) in the following letter to one of the religious opponents he was attempting to convert through reason:

"Bring forward all the arguments you wish and say whatever you please and speak your mind freely. Now that you are safe and free to say whatever you please, appoint some arbitrator who will impartially judge between us and lean only towards the truth and be free from the slyness of passion and that arbitrator shall be Reason, whereby God makes us responsible for our own rewards and punishments. Herein I have dealt justly with you and have given you full security and am ready to accept whatever decision Reason may give for me or against me. For "There shall be no coercion in matters of faith" [2: 256] and I have only invited you to accept our faith willingly and of your own accord and have pointed out the hideousness of your present belief. Peace be with you and the blessings of God!"

We, from Muslim Professionals Forum, believe that this is the recourse that should be taken by the government in handling issues pertaining to Raja Petra in particular. By resorting to intellectual discourse, any differences in opinions or interpretations could be ironed out in a civilized manner. We therefore call upon the Prime Minister of Malaysia, to release Raja Petra unconditionally, and all the other ISA detainees for that matter. We also call upon the Prime Minister to abolish this draconian Act that clearly violates the basic human rights that were enshrined in the Qur’an ever since.

MPF 2ND PRESS RELEASE - ISA ARRESTS
20th September 2008

The Muslim Professionals Forum (MPF) welcomes the release of MP Theresa Kok from ISA detention. However the unrestrained chorus of thinly veiled threats to invoke the ISA by a cohort of political leaders that include members of the cabinet is a very disturbing development.

It is not difficult for the ordinary citizens to see this as a deliberate, if not orchestrated attempt to cast a climate of fear and intimidation in the Malaysian political ambience.

That such a development continues despite the resignation of senator Zaid Ibrahim as de facto law minister, open disagreement of UMNO’s major allies in Barisan Nasional and widespread criticisms from civil society groups gives credence to the long held belief that the ISA is an indispensable tool to be wielded by the executive whenever its cling to power is under threat, hence the reluctance to repeal it.

It is unfortunate that UMNO with its illustrious history in the struggle for independence and nation building is today reduced, in the eyes of the rakyat, to a cornered beast.

We urge leaders of the ruling party, especially members of the cabinet to act more responsibly in carrying out the mandate to govern the country.

As has been repeatedly pointed out by many, the ISA is a gross violation of fundamental human rights, anti-democratic and inimical to the principles of justice in Islam.

MPF PRESS RELEASE - ISA ARRESTS
13th September 2008

The arrests of MP Theresa Kok and journalist Tan Hoon Cheng under the ISA following that of blogger Raja Petra Kamarudin raise grave concern for Malaysians.

An endearing legacy of Abdullah Ahmad Badawi’s leadership that we have come to appreciate is the openness albeit limited, that has come as a breath of fresh air after 2 decades of punitive control of the public sphere.

The arrests of the three individuals under the draconian law at a time when Malaysians have become more mature politically and less inclined to be baited by racial politics will no doubt further erode the legitimacy of and support for the ruling party, perhaps irrevocably.

Of no less import will be the repercussions to Malaysia’s reputation internationally, that time and again the ruling party resorts to an unjust and antiquated piece of legislation to silence dissent in order to sustain her cling to power.

It is clear to all that the arrests of MP Theresa Kok and journalist Tan Hoon Cheng are completely without justification. Tan was merely doing her job as a journalist and UMNO has undertaken the appropriate measures, including an apology from its deputy president. In the "Puchong Azan Issue", MP Theresa Kok was arrested over what is clearly a false allegation. We urge the authorities to immediately release the two and bring to book those responsible for fomenting racial and religious hatred.

It cannot be completely denied that Raja Petra Kamarudin in his writings and those who contribute to his blog have expressed views that many Muslims consider as denigrating the prophet and the religion of Islam. However we believe this can be countered by sound arguments based on well accepted teachings and sources of Islam. In the extreme, the authorities may take him to the Syariah court. The use of the ISA is excessive, inhumane and runs counter to Islam’s principles of justice.

In this blessed month of Ramadhan, we urge the authorities to act justly in carrying out their responsibility of maintaining the peace and security of the country. We also urge everyone in the public sphere to exercise restraint and wisdom in discussing issues of race and religion.

MPF PRESS RELEASE
12th August 2008

MPF regrets the unruly action of protestors that forced an abrupt end to the Bar Council forum on conversion to Islam on 9th August 2008. We acknowledge that as a nation with two justice systems as accorded by the Federal Constitution, there would be outstanding issues that remain unresolved, one of them being the subject of the Saturday forum.

It is quite understandable that when a divorce case between a Muslim and a non Muslim spouse is brought to the Syariah Court, the non Muslim would see this as an infringement of Islamic law against their rights. This may be due to a number of factors, among which are lack of knowledge and misconceptions of Islam and Islamic law based on precedent cases. It would not be inconceivable that there would be some degree of animosity and prejudice that the religion has directly or indirectly contributed to the dissolution of their marriage.

As much as we hold that the Syariah is an indivisible part of Islam, the functioning of the Syariah courts and the intricacies of specific enactments are human endeavours that will always have room for improvement.

The recommendation by a former SUHAKAM Commissioner, Dr. Mehrun Siraj that the Syariah court should not unilaterally make any decisions that might affect the rights of non Muslims, is a sound initiative towards resolving the issue and should be seriously considered by all states.

The Saturday incident, similar to the disruption of Article 11 Forum not long ago, showed that Islam and the administration of Islamic Law in this country is still very much a sensitive issue, one that touches many a Muslim across party lines. However, from the viewpoint of non Muslim rights on these outstanding issues and freedom of expression, there is a valid reason for holding such a public forum, with the possible consequences taken into consideration.

Meanwhile, we urge the government to reactivate the joint committee of civil and Syariah lawyers which had been tasked to discuss matters relating to marriage and family issues, to work towards an amicable solution.

MPF STATEMENT
The Muslim Professionals Forum (MPF) regrets Karpal Singh’s knee jerk political rhetorics to our public forum titled "Who Needs an Islamic State" held at the Kelab Golf Perkhidmatan Awam on 20th April 2008 (Karpal tells PAS to drop Islamic state policy; Malaysiakini 22nd April 2008)

What makes it even more regrettable was that it was not evidence based and hence devoid of any grasp of the course of events in Kiara. It is evident that Mr. Karpal’s entrenched position is based on old prejudices, out of synch with the openness that Malaysia’s new politics expects.

Maybe Mr. Karpal needs to widen his reading horizons and references and heed to the investigative reporting by "alternative media" which among others wrote "PAS research director Dr Dzulkifli Ahmad was well received by the audience even though he apologised at the onset that his preparation for this morning was the bare minimum (although he added in a few points while Abdelwahab was speaking). Quoting verses from the Quran effortlessly and framing his discussion within the local context, he said that the supreme objective of Syariah is justice. Quoting an ulama, he explained: "Syariah is the public interest of humanity, avoiding harm, enriching (with) benefits." With his witty and friendly style, he engaged the audience by explaining how the construct or form really does not matter, as what counts is the substance. For those who had long thought of PAS followers as turban-wearing mullahs, Dzulkifli came across as balanced and not rabidly religious." (No answers, but a good beginning to a "heavy" question" The Malaysia Insider; April 21, 2008,).

And to authenticate the report, allow us to quote Dr. Dzulkifli who said : "And I am of the conviction that the word called Islamic State, it is not found in the Quran anyway, and not even found in the prophetic tradition of the prophet (peace be upon him). And its almost like a derived political phraseology or conception that came a lot later…I am not here to defend a particular form of Islamic state and the idea of advocating the Islamic Khilafah or otherwise. To me this is not the be all or end all or the purpose of the Islamic movement and the Islamic political party."

This is very much in accordance with the main theme of Dr. al-Affendi’s work, who, as early as 1991 (1st edition of the book "Who needs an Islamic state") moved away from the idea of Islamic state as a theocratic construct to that of a modern polity based on Islamic values of justice, good governance and respect for fundamental rights, a polity that is not incompatible with the ideals of democracy. Dr. Zulkifli himself at the beginning of his talk said that "I could have been the author of this book".

Anyone familiar with the Malaysian political scenario would know that Dr. Dzulkifli has been consistent in advocating such vision of Islamic polity since he came to prominence as the Director of PAS Research Centre under the illustrious, the late Ustaz Fadhil Noor. He is indeed instrumental in the re-invention of PAS and the party’s manifesto for PRU 12 that clearly reflects such polity.

It would be unfortunate for the Pakatan Rakyat (PR) if her top echelon at the negotiating table are to be swayed readily by the mainstream press. The de facto leader of the Pakatan Rakyat and the august Pakatan Rakyat consultative council needs to rein in these dinosaurs who are much too often "celupar" and are myopic as to what constitutes fact and fiction.

That "cool, lazy Sunday", lived up to its decorum as an intellectual discourse which has always been uppermost in the minds of the MPF board.

We even issued an invitation to YB Gobind Singh Deo DAP MP for Puchong to sit on the panel, but he politely declined for various pressing reasons. Even Imtiaz was pleasantly surprised when he remarked : "I never thought I'd be sharing the stage with somebody from PAS and actually saying pretty much the same thing."

Malaysia post-2008 elections is embracing a new political landscape which is based on the bedrock principles of universal justice, equity and fairness and an ethno-religious discourse which is transparent, civil, sensitive yet non-emotional. Unfortunately, it would seem that there are still giants of Malaysian politics who are invariably trapped in the archaic time zones of "Jurassic Politics".

MPF @ Rumah Solehah

We had a makan2 thingy last night @ Rumah Solehah, the new house (their very own home, no need to move like nomads now) is sumwhere in Jln Thavers, Kg. Pandan where we got lost !! The MPF (individuals la) did some Qurban for the kids of Rumah Solehah; a shelter for the women and kids with HIV and AIDS. Since my dad is the chairman of the house thus MPF is somehow related too. Last two years we did a fundraising for the house (raised close to 250K), and of course the usual visits. So technically my dad is the father for all the kids there, 25 or 26 of them. But sadly not all of them came last night, they were still in the old house @ Bdr Tun Razak because most of them were not well. We had yummylicious nasi pilau by Aunty Azra, and the main dishes of kerutup daging & fried chicken by Aunty Rohana (sedap giler !) , mee by Aunty Elya, different types of salad by Aunty Aishah, heavenly desserts cupcakes, donuts by Aunty Gee & Aunty Mils and cream caramel by Datin Wan and lots more. The whole family of Uncle Dr. Mazeni did the slaughtering & cooking at their animal fram in Klang. Uncle Manan brought a box load of presents and goody packs for the kids. And my mummy provided the crockeries ie paper plates, paper cups, forks and spoons and doubled as the mandor delegating all the responsibilities. And we had to send some of them back to the old house otherwise Mak Wan needs to make two trips. Kesian the kids cuti tak pegi mane-mane pun.

For those who are free, please do drop by Rumah Solehah and see by yourselves the kind of life they are living, the kids are desperately in need of your love and care. Just spend an hour or so playing with the kids will make you feel very much attached to them, indeed they are very special.

The Smiles of Not Knowing

They came into this world without knowing
They go through the days without understanding
They live dear life innocently without much fear
They bear the sufferings with venerable vigor

All they crave for is your understanding and caring
Your warm touches, hugs and kisses
Your love and lots more
To live their dear life with a little bit of hope

The smiles of not knowing
Dear Lord, bless these tiny souls

MUSLIM PROFESSIONALS FORUM STATEMENT

"Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it." George Santayana (1863-1952)

The Muslim Professionals Forum (MPF) view with much concern the events that have unfolded the past few weeks which only testifies to the wisdom of the abovementioned verse.

Civil society and the world at large has been treated to dark images of the streets of Kuala Lumpur due to memory lapses on the part of both the government and the governed.

The unprecedented, highly inflammatory and malicious statements issued by P. Uthayakumar, as legal adviser to Hindraf (Hindu Rights Action Force), failed to recognized the decorum of civilized discourse and was calculated to incite racial and religious discord among Malaysians.

The perennial denial of her citizens to a peaceful assembly and the inappropriate show of force by the police only serve to demonstrate an unduly autocratic political governance out of sync with the higher aspirations of the democratic process.

THE MUSLIM PROFESSIONALS FORUM (MPF) TAKING COGNISANCE OF THE ABOVE DO HEREBY:
1. URGE the leadership of Hindraf to furnish the legal evidence for their alleged grouses and grievances and cease the distortion and falsification of historical facts;

2. URGE the leadership of Hindraf to exhaust all the legal avenues within the Malaysian legal and judicial system to seek redress of their alleged discrimination and marginalisation;

3. URGE the government to respect and honour the fundamental right of the freedom of expression and peaceful assembly of her citizens;

4. URGE the government through the office of the Inspector General of Police to not inflame further the situation by its high handedness but instead observe due restraint;

5. URGE the government through the office of the Attorney General to study the Court action filed by Hindraf in the UK and to take the necessary preemptive steps relevant thereto;

6. CONDEMN in no uncertain terms the veiled threat of violence by some leaders of Hindraf if its demands are not met;

7. SUPPORT the aspirations of all Malaysians to treasure the peace and harmony we have thus far enjoyed and protect it against all forms of subversive elements.

MPF PRESS RELEASE : Lina Joy Case

31st May 2007

It is with a sense of relief that we learned of the long-awaited Federal Court decision on the Azalina Jailani (Lina Joy) case. We would like to congratulate the judges who have exercised their wisdom and courage to come to a decision on such a controversial issue under the intense glare of the international and local media, alongside that of interested observers from across the spectrum of human rights and religious organizations.

We laud the Federal Court’s decision - upholding that of the Court of Appeal and the High Court - that the jurisdiction to change the religious status of a Muslim properly belongs to the Shariah Court.

For many of us this is clearly an issue of administrative procedure. However this has unfortunately been championed into a cause célèbre for the complete secularization of Malaysian society and to undermine the position of Islam in this country by turning it into a Human Rights issue - that of religious freedom under Article 11, in its wake generating unhealthy tensions between Muslims and non-Muslims.

For Muslims to feel euphoric that Islam has finally triumphed is also misplaced. This is not a battle between Islam and the rest. It is simply restoring things in their right place, of respecting the separate jurisdictions of the Shariah and Civil courts in accordance to Article 121(1a), and of adhering to procedures.

In our enthusiasm to champion religious freedom, let us not turn our backs on these mechanisms and institutions that have held together our complex society and the source of our much praised religious harmony.

MPF PRESS RELEASE : INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE "MUSLIM WOMEN IN THE MIDST OF CHANGE"

Introduction
The status, role and real world situation of Muslim women have occupied a central position in present discussions on Islam and the modern world. This alongside the much questioned capability of Muslims to deal with democratic values and modern day ideas on human rights.

This perception arose because of the actual condition of women in Muslim societies that was contributed largely by local traditions and practices and not due to Islam itself. This however is ill understood by historians, sociologists, feminists, both Muslims and non-Muslims, conscious or unconsciously.

Nonetheless, it has to be recognized that the Islamic position and specific teachings with regards to gender equity, the institution of the family, personal and social behavioural mores do not accord with secular liberalism’s notion of gender equality and individual liberty.

The Muslim Professionals Forum (MPF) as a Muslim NGO that concerns itself with issues relevant to Islam and Muslims in the wider world and also within the context of modern, pluralistic Malaysian society, endeavours to address these issues by organizing an international conference on 1 - 2 September 2007 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC), Kuala Lumpur.

The theme of the conference is "MUSLIM WOMEN IN THE MIDST OF CHANGE" and the objectives are as follows :-
  1. To understand the history and evolution of feminist "traditions" within Islam.
  2. To discuss Muslim gender roles from the Quran and Sunnah.
  3. To examine the injustices against women in Muslim societies and recommend solutions.
Participants
This seminar is open to the general public although we expect our audience to consist mainly of young professionals, women’s organizations, representatives from NGO’s, academics and representatives from the various Islamic and governmental institutions in Malaysia. Efforts would be made to attract participants from the Asia-Pacific region.

Contents of the Seminar
The two (2) day seminar will open with a keynote address by the Minister of Women, Family & Community Development, Y.Bhg. Dato’ Shahrizat Abdul Jalil. There are three (3) plenary lectures and nine (9) workshop sessions.

The plenary lectures will address the general contours and intellectual background of the particular topic, drawing from modern scholarly works, traditional sources and the experiences of modernizing Muslim societies. The titles of the plenary lectures are :
  1. Feminist Thinking Revisited
  2. Islam & Gender
  3. Muslim Women at the Cross Roads - Cultural & Traditional Values vs Religious Imperatives
The speakers assigned for these lectures are distinguished scholars and professionals whose contribution to the field has been internationally recognized.

The workshops and breakout sessions will give the opportunity for participants to discuss and exchange ideas on specific topics, the focus of which will be weaknesses in Muslim society with regards to interpretation of Islamic teachings, the influence of local traditions and cultures, short comings of the Islamic administration/institution that hampered Muslim women from achieving their full potential.

The workshop facilitators who will be guiding the discussions are Malaysian NGO leaders known for their activism and advocacy with regards to Muslim women issues in the local context whereas the international speakers will be the workshop resource persons.

List of international speakers and facilitators
  1. Heba Rauf (Egypt)
  2. Dr. Haitham Khayat (Egypt)
  3. Dr. Sulaiman Dufford (USA)
  4. Assoc. Prof. Harlina Siraj (UKM)
  5. Assoc. Prof. Zaleha (UIA)
  6. Dr. Kamar Ainiah (Lawyer)
  7. Zainah Anwar (SIS)
  8. Roselainy Abdul Rahman (UTM)
  9. Kamaliah Noordin (JIM)
  10. Other speakers To Be Confirmed
The last session of the seminar will be in the form of an open forum where the invited speakers and participants will have the opportunity to express ideas on issues raised in the course of the seminar.

Conclusion
It is hoped that this seminar will raise the level of awareness on this major issue of Islam and society, as well as perhaps offering some solution from this new insight especially for policy makers and government institutions. Putting together an international seminar on this scale is a huge organizational burden. The formal support and financial grant from the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development will go a long way towards ensuring the success of the conference.

GETTING TO KNOW THE QURAN

The Quran, the final word of Allah. A revelation from the heavens, for all mankind, till the end of time.

Yet how much is this book a part of our children’s lives? Do they ponder over its verses and marvel at its miracles? Do they understand the uniqueness of the Quran, that it shows us life according to the Creator? Do they know how to interact with the Quran, the concept of Zikr and Fikr? Are they aware of the scientific miracles of the Quran, of the deep secrets that lie within it?

MPF will be holding a half-day workshop aimed at teenagers and hopes to bring the Quran into their lives as more than just a book recited at religious classes; that the Quran is without doubt, the key to our guidance.

The workshop will be conducted by Brother Hasrizal bin Abdul Jamil.

He also held the position of Principal and Curriculum Advisor of the Belfast Islamic School.

Back in Malysia, Brother Hasrizal is pursuing his Masters in History and Civilisation at the International Islamic University. He is currently the Muslim Counsellor at the National Heart Institute (IJN) besides being kept busy by various speaking engagements.

HOW DOES ISLAM BENEFIT ME?

Ever had your child ask, why did Allah create us? Why does He want me to be a good Muslim?

Simple, yet important questions in any child's life. They are often told that being good Muslims promises them untold rewards in the Hereafter, but it is life here and now that matters very much to these youngsters. What are the benefits now, in this world?

INTERNATIONAL NEWS
Statement from organisers of 'Understanding Hamas'

(Forthcoming lecture by Azzam Tamimi, 4/12/06)

At 7pm on Monday 4th December, Dr. Azzam Tamimi, director of the Institute of Islamic Political Thought, will speak at Edinburgh University’s Appleton Tower on 'Understanding Hamas'. He will sell signed copies of his new book, Hamas: Unwritten Chapters (C. Hurst & Co., London, 2006), priced at £15.

In the face of criticism and accusations, we, the three organising societies, reiterate our commitment to host this important event and invite our critics to engage with their minds and desist from knee-jerk reactions and politically motivated smears.

The Speaker and Topic
As well as being an accomplished academic, Dr. Tamimi comments regularly on the Arab and Western media, particularly on issues related to Middle Eastern politics and Islamism. He was an important consultant on the BBC’s Power of Nightmares documentaries and has his own Comment is Free column at the Guardian. He has long been a prominent voice of Palestinian resistance and is well known as a speaker in the British anti-war movement.

Crucial to understanding the ongoing violence and discord in the Middle East is analysis of the discourses maintained by various actors in the conflict. Since its formation, Hamas (the Islamic Resistance Movement) has most closely represented the Islamic trend within the broad Palestinian resistance movement. As of January 2006, it now represents the democratically elected government of Palestine. This is a reality that must be accepted.

Dr. Tamimi is an important analyst of this reality, being an expert on the history, principles and tactics of the Hamas organisation, which in fact has two main dimensions: social and military. Whilst not being a member, he has close relationships with many of its leading players. A fact that upsets some of our critics is that Dr. Tamimi describes himself as a 'supporter' of Hamas. This, we maintain, has no bearing on our keenness to hear his views.

In the last few years, there have been several visits to the Edinburgh University campus by representatives of the Israeli government. Most recently, Shimon Mercer-Wood of their London embassy spoke at an event hosted by the Politics Society, alongside Baroness Jenny Tonge. Inevitably, Hamas - as the ruling party, and a significant grassroots organisation - featured heavily in the discussion, particularly from its Israeli critic. Absent from the debate was a Palestinian voice, let alone one representing the perspective of Hamas. We believe that this balance deserves to be redressed.

The Event and its Critics
The aim of the event is to hear about this important topic from a highly qualified speaker, and to allow students and academics to make up their own minds. There will be ample time for questions and discussion, which we insist must be in the spirit of understanding, as our chosen title implies.

It is disappointing that the campus Jewish Society have so misrepresented the speaker as 'anti-Semitic', and the event as promoting 'racist discourse'. It is understandable that they are opposed to Hamas, but these exaggerations do little to support their complaints, which we invited them to share with us directly. If they claim that any discussion of Hamas - other than in a context of explicit condemnation - is 'anti-Semitic behaviour', then we refute that as irrational and against basic freedom of speech and enquiry. We stand together against anti-Semitism in all its forms: and opposition to Zionism and the apartheid state of Israel is not one of these forms. Claiming so is nothing but a tactic of intimidation.

The event is about understanding, not promoting. We, the organisers, do not necessarily endorse the views of this or any other speaker, let alone the group he is speaking about. We respect the right of all our members to hold their own views on matters of such contention, and we as societies do not take particular positions. Dr. Tamimi himself does not necessarily endorse every statement of Hamas; for example, he has advocated revising its Charter to remove reference to an anti-Semitic forged document. He is clearly opposed to allowing the debate to be tarnished by racism, as are we, the organisers.

We hope this event will provoke informed debate on campus and in the wider society, and in light of the government’s intrusive guidelines to universities about 'extremism', it is a chance to underline our University’s commitment to freedom of speech, of which we are very proud. This is an issue of concern to students and others who are keenly aware of developments in the Middle East, therefore the 'Understanding Hamas' will be a welcome contribution to the debate.

PRESS RELEASE
Islamic Society Reiterates Commitment to Interfaith Dialogue
2nd December 2006 - Immediate release
Contact: Sohaib Saeed, 07973 708 928

The Islamic Society of Edinburgh University today expressed their regret at the decision of the Edinburgh University Jewish Society to pull out of the planned campus Interfaith Week in March 2006.

The week of events is to promote understanding of the various faith communities at the University and to tackle misconceptions. As well as the Islamic and Jewish societies, the key organisers are the Christian Union and Baha’i Society.

The Jewish Society’s decision follows the publicity of an event on 'Understanding Hamas' hosted by the Islamic Society, the Stop the War Coalition and the Palestine Solidarity Society. The University authorities have clarified that they are committed to freedom of speech and will allow the event to go ahead, given that its express aim is to increase 'Understanding' among students and academics, who are invited to listen to an expert and then participate in discussion.

The speaker, Dr. Azzam Tamimi, is a leading academic and commentator on Islamic political thought as well as Middle Eastern affairs, and is launching his new book at the event, entitled Hamas: Unwritten Chapters (Hurst, London, 2006). While a leading critic of Zionism, he frequently speaks against anti-Semitism and bigotry.

Reacting to the Jewish Society’s decision, Islamic Society President Abdulla Mashaal said: 'We are very sad at this decision, which doesn’t make sense to us. We value our relations with the Jewish Society, which have included mutual visits to our places of worship. They are implicating us in anti-Semitism even though they know how opposed we are to any form of racism. We hope they will reconsider soon, so that all our faith societies can continue to work together for the common good.'

*For further details, contact Sohaib Saeed, 07973 708 928

Notes: 1. The event is 7pm-9pm on Monday 4th December at Edinburgh University’s Appleton Tower. Admission is £2.

2. Dr. Tamimi will sell signed copies of his new book, Hamas: Unwritten Chapters (C. Hurst & Co., London, 2006), priced at £15.

3. The three organising societies have prepared a detailed statement of commitment to the event going ahead despite criticism. This is available by e-mailing press@isoced.org.

Public Talk - “THE CONCEPT OF FREEDOM IN ISLAM”

The freedoms of choice and expression are not alien concepts in Islam. On the contrary, they are integral to the religion right from its birth. The failures of Muslims and Muslim countries in upholding those freedoms have been used by elements inimical to Islam to denigrate the religion when in actual fact those failures originate from Muslims and Muslim governments straying from the true teachings of the religion. The speaker will also explain if there is any fundamental difference between the Islamic and Western understanding of what constitutes ‘freedom’

Release of ISA detainees
On the eve of this festive season, the Muslim Professionals Forum welcomes the news of the release of 7 ISA detainees who are allegedly members of terrorist groups KMM and JI. We congratulate the home minister, also the prime minister of Malaysia for taking this bold albeit late decision. However, we urge the government to go further and release the remaining detainees or charge them in an open court.

The ISA has robbed men like Nik Adli and his colleagues 5 years of their life without their guilt ever been proven, and their young families have been subjected to untold anguish, uncertainties, financial difficulties and even shame which they do not at all deserve. Nothing can ever compensate them.

Except in the most extenuating circumstances (and under strict judicial review) this archaic legislation is against the Islamic principles of justice and the rule of law.

One question that remains in the people's minds on the detention of these alleged terror groups members is whether we have violated the fundamental rights of a few of our Muslim citizens at the behest of a foreign power in this hyped up war on "Islamic terrorism".

Justice and accountability, and an honest commitment to the upholding of Islam within the limits of Malaysian democracy is the only way to prevent religion from being exploited by marginal individuals with an extremist bent. And within the context of Malaysia this is an insignificant problem that can be easily handled by our security and justice system.

We wish all Muslims Selamat Hari Raya and Happy Deepavali to our Hindu friends.

Farewell Dr Nor Baizura
Dr Mazeni Alwi
Sep 27, 06 6:31pm

The medical community is saddened to learn of the passing of Dr Nor Baizura after 15 days in coma in the Intensive Care Unit. The young doctor was only a few months into her housemanship, and coming from a humble background she was her family's hope for a better future.

Unfortunately, this is not the first time a government medical personnel died following a road traffic accident while in the course of duty. Many of us in this field can easily recollect similar tragic stories involving individuals that we personally know.

Given Malaysia's rate of road traffic accidents, having to make frequent visits to peripheral clinics or sending ill patients to major referral centres in Kuala Lumpur can be very perilous.

Then there are young medical officers who contracted tuberculosis in the course of their work. They have to undergo long periods of anti-TB treatment, suffer chronic ill-health and have their plans for postgraduate careers disrupted. This is only going to get worse if the threat of the HIV pandemic becomes real.

The issue of insurance cover and compensation for government medical personnel has been raised each time a tragic incident like this happens. However it is all too easy for the administrative bureaucracy to give the shrug of indifference as those unfortunate enough to suffer injury, death or chronic ill-health are voiceless junior medical officers and staff nurses.

It is time we recognise that occupational hazards is not the monopoly of blue collar workers who at least have Socso, Niosh and the industrial courts. In striving to upgrade and modernise our public service to become more efficient, caring and friendly, we urge the government to seriously consider providing insurance cover and financial compensation to those at risk of injury and death in the course of serving the public. Posthumous words of commendation and passing the hat around simply will not do.

My sincere condolences to the family of Dr Nor Baizura. Al Fatihah.

The writer is chairman, Muslim Professionals Forum.
